Modern interpretation of California sleeping - porch

This covered porch is a modern interpretation of a traditional ‘sleeping porch’ for the extremely hot Californian summers.

It is a light, airy space to be used on long summer evenings, providing a transitional space between the inside of the house and the huge, stunning views of the vineyards and mountains beyond.

We used ‘off the shelf’ Douglas Fir lumber from the local lumber yard, we chose to use a 1.5 inch thickness throughout and had some fun prototyping ways of creating columns. The result is a piece of modern, California architecture that sits neatly in the vast landscape.
